NVIDIA, Did You Say CPU or GPU?

Can Arm help NVIDIA become even more dominant?

Part 6 of the Arm Rising Series, by Liftr Insights

NVIDIA exited 2024 with an over 84.9% share of accelerators deployed in the cloud, as shown by Liftr Insights data. Given this dominant market position, what else can NVIDIA do to add customer value and drive more growth from cloud deployments?

Google Axion CPUs: Better Late Than Never

1/5 of all instances deployed in Q4 2024 were GCP’s own Axion

Like Microsoft, Google also took a wait-and-see attitude toward building its own Arm CPUs. And just like Microsoft, Axion launched big with a 21.2% share of all instances deployed on GCP in Q4 of 2024. In many ways, Axion has similar characteristics as Microsoft Cobalt and Amazon Graviton CPU offerings, which make sense as they are all derived from the Arm Neoverse 2 CPU.

Ampere: A David vs. Goliath story in the cloud

Ampere’s long history in the clouds is shown in the Lift Insights data, but there are dark clouds on the horizon.

SoftBank announced its intent to acquire Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion on March 19, 2025, stating "Ampere’s expertise in semiconductors and high-performance computing will help accelerate [SoftBank's] vision."

Ampere first appeared in Oracle Cloud among the major players. Liftr data show Ampere growth from that first appearance to its 24.0% share of all Arm in the cloud in mid-2024.

AWS Bets on Arm: Graviton

AWS continues its emphatic endorsement of Arm with its Graviton chips

Part 4 of the Arm Rising Series, by Liftr Insights

AWS is the dominant deployer of Arm-based instances, with a 57.2% share of Arm instances in the public cloud. While its initial focus was to drive costs down for low-end workloads, AWS has expanded its Arm capabilities over the years, directly benefiting enterprises in multiple ways. Just before Liftr began tracking AWS in 2019, AWS was the first cloud provider to make Arm processors available. But market longevity is only one part of the story.
